Interreligious Group Will Help Construct House Of Worship For Disciples CongregationFriends,
Rev. Eric Elder continues to give untold hours painting and repairing, but there's lots left to do… On Sunday, May 4th, Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be the recipient of yet another work day through a program of Austin Area Interreligious Ministries (AAIM). AAIM has workgroups from congregations that work on many neighborhood homes that require assistance. This year they are adding a house of worship, and Bethany has been chosen! Now for the really interesting part… the work groups that will be working on our facility are from the Jewish and Muslim faith communities. KLRU, our local public television station, will be doing a documentary of the occasion. Bethany has already decided to hold Sunday School and Worship an hour early so that we can prepare a spaghetti lunch for our guests and so we can work as well! We will use the next few weeks to learn more about our brothers and sisters who will be coming to help us. A little about Bethany--an historically African American congregation with a few Anglos and a few Hispanics. We are small, only around 30 in worship. We are in a neighborhood that needs our services, such as the Faith Food Bank, and needs the comfort and encouragement shown by our members. This falls on the heals of another first--a community-wide Sunrise Easter Worship Service which was held on the hill behind our church. Two other African American congregations joined us, New Hope Baptist Church and Diakonos-A House of Servants, and we hosted approximately 100 people that morning and fed them breakfast. Please pray for us as we grow and learn and move forward in God's time! Oh, and enjoy the photo… Peace, |
