HELM sponsors Razing Church/Raising Church

In January 2014 Higher Education and Leadership Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will sponsor Razing Church/Raising Church, two identical conferences for undergraduate students, along with chaplains and campus ministers, to consider their role in the re-creation of Christian witness and community.

The weekend conferences will feature writer, lecturer, and storyteller Dr. Peter Rollins.  Rollins has authored numerous books including, Insurrection: To Believe is Human; to Doubt, Divine and The Idolatry of God: Breaking our Addiction to Certainty and Satisfaction and is known for overturning traditional notions of religion and forming “churches” that preach the Good News that we can’t be satisfied, that life is difficult, and that we don’t know the secret. His approach has been coined “pyrotheology.”  His web site is www.peterrollins.net.

“We want to give students a chance to talk about what is both authentic to Christian tradition and relevant to their unique contexts, “said Hollie Woodruff, HELM director of Undergraduate Programs.  We want to learn how to raze bad habits, excavate old traditions and raise new practices to sustain a more fruitful faith.”

To accommodate differing schedules, Razing Church/Raising Church is that it will be offered at two different times and locations: January 3-5, 2014 in Julian, California at Camp Stephens and January 17-19, 2014 in Bruceville, Texas at Greene Family Camp.

Registration for undergraduate students affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ is $25 per person and subsidies are available for travel expenses.  Disciples’ chaplains and campus ministers who attend accompanied by at least two students from their campus, will also pay $25.  Registration for all others is $225.
