General Minister And President To Speak At Haitian Church Congress

General Minister and President Sharon Watkins will preach at the 10th Congress of the National Spiritual Council of Haitian Churches (CONASPEH) during its Feb. 9-11 meetings. CONASPEH, a Protestant group composed of nearly 5,000 Haitian grassroots churches, anticipates more than 3,000 people will attend the meeting, which will take place in the country’s National Theater in Port au Prince, Haiti’s capital.

Felix Ortiz, Global Ministries’ area executive for Latin America and the Caribbean, who will be at the Congress, has contributed Global Ministries’ funds to make it possible for many poor pastors to attend the event. Watkins will preach on Feb. 10. Rick Lowery, professor of Hebrew Bible at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla., also will speak. He will lead a Bible study on the theology of abundance based on the Genesis 1 creation story. Jerri Handy, minister of The View Christian Church (DOC) in Portland, Ore., will lead a workshop on the pastoral care of trauma and emergencies and Karen Yount, coordinator of women’s ministries in the Greater Kansas City region and a member of Budd Park Christian Church (DOC), will bring a delegation from the Kansas City area.
