Disciples And UCC Leaders Push To End Hostilities In Sudan
Disciples News Service - 3/16/2007

A pastoral letter calling for an end to the genocide in Sudan and prodding the U.S. to take a tougher stance against the Sudanese government was released March 7. The letter says, "As Christians, we realize that we must share in the responsibility to protect human life," and is signed by Disciples General Minister and President (GMP) Sharon Watkins, United Church of Christ GMP John Thomas, Global Ministries Co-Executives David Vargas and Cally Rogers-Witte, and Africa Office Executive Sandra Gourdet.

Both church bodies passed a resolution, "Promoting Peace for All in the Sudan," in 2005 calling on Sudan to end what has been widely recognized as genocide against its own citizens, and to engage with the international community in efforts to obtain a comprehensive peace that includes Darfur. Members of the two churches are urged to stand in solidarity with the People of the Sudan/Darfur and to continue to pray, study and discern as well as participate in such efforts as the Dear Sudan campaign.
