America’s unemployment rate may be edging down, but millions of people are still searching for jobs. Several Disciples congregations are among faith-based organizations helping unemployed or underemployed persons find employment. East Dallas Christian Church in Dallas, Texas, for example, started Job Path last year, a program that holds periodic meetings to assist the jobless. The program grew out of prayer by the church’s elders and consists of monthly lunch meetings in which people are offered encouragement and job assistance. On April 10, the National Council of Churches (NCC) will air a program on CBS-TV about other faith-based efforts to help the unemployed. The special is entitled “Unemployment: How Faith Communities Help Job Seekers.” Although East Dallas is not featured in the program, the show profiles the work of several denominations and religious leaders who reach out to the unemployed.
