Kentucky Disciples Church Starts Free Farmer's Market

Burgin Christian Members Debbie Armstrong and Rice LearA Disciples congregation in Kentucky has started a farmer’s market to give away food. Burgin Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Burgin, Ky., will host the free market on the last Saturday of each month through September. Members of the church were asked to plant extra rows in their personal gardens and donate baked goods to give away to anybody who needs food. When the farmer’s market opened in April, all of the supplies were gone in about two hours, said Mandye Yates, pastor at Burgin Christian.

"For the nearly three years that I’ve been here, we had always done projects that benefited our building," said Yates. "This time we wanted to do something to help the community. There are people who are in need, especially in this economy." The church has advertised the farmer’s market in newspapers and at a nearby food bank, which usually runs out of food. Yates is also trying to broaden the outreach ministry by getting other churches in Mercer County involved.
