Week of Compassion (WoC) is responding to the nation’s deadliest tornado disaster in 86 years, and its second worst in American history. The storms struck the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, and Kentucky killing nearly 350 people. WoC, the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the U.S. and Canada, immediately began responding to initial needs emerging out of Disciples churches across Alabama and Georgia.
While WoC has not heard of any Disciples’ deaths, two Disciples churches in Kentucky were damaged by the weather system and several families have reported their homes damaged or destroyed. Food, shelter, clothing and medical care is being provided for those in hard-hit areas. Thanks to Disciples’ generosity, Week of Compassion has been able to assist in the response.
