With origins dating back prior to the Civil War, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Ionia, Mich., will celebrate its sesquicentennial the weekend of May 15-17. Friends, members and guests of the 150-year-old congregation will get the festivities started on May 15, when they gather to enjoy the church’s "Serenity Garden," located between the parsonage and the sanctuary, a lasagna and salad supper, and a worship service with a guest choir from Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Grand Rapids, Mich. Former pastors of First Christian will also be recognized.
The celebration at First Christian will continue on May 16 and 17 with tours of the building, founded in 1859, on Saturday and a church services and meals on Sunday.
