National Avenue Christian Church from Springfield, Missouri started their partnership with the rural community of Hilapo Dos in 2006, funding the healthcare, education, and economic development programs in the area. The Rainbow Network assisted in the connection.
In April several members traveled to celebrate the completion of 25 new houses in Hilapo Dos, a community located in the mountains of Nicaragua not far from the city of Matagalpa. Starting in 2011, members of the church gave $100,000 that supported the building of these new homes.
After traditional dances by the youth and speeches from various Rainbow Network staff, Hilapo Dos leaders, and the mayor of San Ramón, a lottery was drawn to find out which house would belong to each of the families. Seven months of sweat equity have finally come to an end and 25 families each have a new concrete block home.
