"Music on the Labyrinth"

Four years ago, Senior Pastor Chuck Blaisdell of First Christian Church conceived the idea of having half a dozen Saturday evening outdoor concerts held on the church’s beautiful labyrinth (inspired by the one at Chartres Cathedral). In the four years since, those concerts have included a wonderful range of music from Saxophone Quartets to Men’s and Women’s A Capella groups, to a locally famous singer/songwriter to Hawaiian music and hula – and much more.  The final event of this summer was on Saturday, August 16, and featured the Oklahoma Region’s Transitional Regional Minister and award-winning bluegrass guitarist Dean Phelps (in November Dean begins as Interim Regional Minister in the Central Rocky Mountain Region).  A local radio station did a story about this music series, the labyrinth, and Dean’s music and interviewed the church’s Associate Pastor Katherine Raley and Music Director Kim Schultz.  That interview (with clips from Dean’s music) can be heard here:  http://tinyurl.com/lf8cxpp  Sr. Pastor Blaisdell notes that “the labyrinth – conceived of by my predecessor Dr. Gaylord Hatler — is FCC’s gift to Colorado Springs; dozens of folks a week from downtown and beyond use the labyrinth as a place to meditate or find a quiet spot in the midst of a busy day.  This fun and informal summer music series has expanded our gift to the city and has been a treat for FCC participants – and shows the multiple uses to which a labyrinth can be put to convey beauty and renewal through music.”   For more information, contact Sr. Pastor Chuck Blasidell at chuck@blaisdells.net or via First Christian’s website www.firstchristiancos.org
