First Christian of Pomona, Calif., is hot on the trail of those who would make money at the expense of the poor. The church, as a member of the Inland Empire Sponsoring Committee (IESC), is heading off a waste transfer and its attendant truck traffic from an area already known for increased incidence of respiratory illness. The proposed site is in an area where the poorest residents, primarily immigrants, live. By serving as advocates and calling for accountability from the city officials and planning commissions the IESC is making headway in protecting the area.
At the same time, the IESC is working toward economic justice through cooperative training and jobs programs to help those hardest hit by the economic downturn.
