Dr. Greg Garrett will be featured as he speaks about his new book based on the music of the band U2 and its theology. The evenings will include multi-media presentations, the music of U2 and his commentary. This will take place on Wednesdays, April 7, 14, and 21, at 7 p.m. at University Christian Church, 2007 University Ave. in Austin.
"Rock music fans who have ever wondered if their faith and musical taste could ever be paired will be intrigued by U2’s story and Garrett’s theological analysis of the band’s music" says Publisher Weekly. Dr. Garrett, who interviewed the fledgling band on their second U.S. tour, takes us from their upbringing in Ireland, to their dominance over the music scene in the early 1990’s and then to their role as spiritual ambassadors to post-9/11 America. He notes, "Throughout, we get a picture of the spirituality that flows out of U2’s music and how their influence is written to affect social issues."
Dr. Garrett currently is a Professor of English at Baylor University and Writer-In-Residence at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. He is also the author of The Gospel According to Hollywood, Holy Superheroes!, and Stories from the Edge: A Theology of Grief.
These presentations are open to the public without charge and each presentation is "self contained" so that you can come to all or just one. University Christian Church, located just south of the University of Texas campus and across the street from the Littlefield Fountain, has a history of engaging the University community in explorations of issues of present concern.
