Louise Johnson was born on Easter Sunday in 1909 while her father, a Disciples pastor, Reverend Marcellus Ely, was preaching. She turned 103 on April 11. A member of First Christian Church, Vallejo, Calif., for most of her adult life, she has been a life-long advocate for hands-on justice and peacemaking, especially when God’s people are hungry. She helped begin an ecumenical group called Lunchless Monday in the 1970s in response to the world hunger crisis. As a way of celebrating her faithful witness, the Louise Johnson Ending Hunger Endowment is being established with Church World Service. Johnson is also a graduate of Chapman University (then Chapman College).
