The General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) held in Indianapolis, IN from July 29th through August 2nd enjoyed unseasonable weather, great speakers and meaningful worship experiences, including Saturday night, August 1st , when the 13th Check was received.
The 13th Check Offering is used by the Pension Fund of the Christian Church to assist retired servants of the Church who have ministered in smaller congregations and in the mission field. In many cases, these smaller congregations paid meager salaries and were not able to pay Pension Plan dues on behalf of their pastors. For these retired pastors and missionaries, their contractual pension is inadequate to provide for a reasonable standard of living. The need is even greater than usual for many in this year of economic turmoil.
Richard Cohee, Senior Vice President/Treasurer, invited people “to contribute generously to the 13th Check Offering on behalf of these worthy servants of the Church.” This offering will provide the 13th Check sent to our most needy in November 2009 and November 2010. The offering received during the Saturday night worship totaled $51,229.84. When combined with gifts received prior to the assembly, the total 13th Check offering received to date was just under $103,000.
