It may be thousands of miles to Indianapolis but for seven youth from Poland spending their summer holiday at the 2009 General Assembly they’ve found a new closeness with their fellow Disciples.
For most this wasn’t their first trip to the U.S. but it was their first to dive into service projects. Their project was to assist an elderly Indianapolis woman rehabilitate her home which they found to be in terrible condition. “It had dirty walls and was dusty and hot. It was fun to put a hammer to walls,” said a young man who enjoyed demolishing drywall.
The homeowner, who was Romanian, appreciated being helped by young people from Poland.
The young people are members of the Reformed Church of Poland which has only ten churches in the country compared to the dominance of the Catholic Church.
“Our services are very different from those in America,” one explained. “I have seen that American church services are happy and joyous, and is very good to be happy about your faith. But sometimes I like our services because you sit in silence, stay serious and talk to God in your own way.”
