Sabbath Supplementals, a five-part video series with author MaryAnn McKibben Dana for her book Sabbath in the Suburbs, is the next step in the evolution of Chalice Press, the publishing house of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
“We recognize people get their information from all kinds of places and in all kinds of formats, so our offerings have to adapt to our culture’s new habits,” says Brad Lyons, president and publisher of Chalice Press. “With resources provided in multiple formats, we envision small groups gathered in homes and churches watching the videos as a way of enriching their experience with the book. I can also see these videos used a part of a great sermon series.”
“Sabbath Supplementals” includes the videos and a downloadable PDF discussion guide for additional group study flexibility. Videos can be streamed live online to any computer or mobile device. The videos and discussion guide are available for free at SabbathInTheSuburbs.com.
Sabbath Supplementals comes a few months after Chalice’s first enhanced eBook available through the iTunes bookstore, Brim: Creative Overflow in Worship Design by Andra Moran and Suzanne Castle. While traditional print versions and eBooks for e-readers and tablets are available, the enhanced eBook gives users direct access to videos, song samples, and other resources.
“The enhanced version of Brim and the Sabbath Supplementals videos are a good start into this new technological world,” Lyons says, “With every book proposal, we ask, ‘is this a book, or is it something more? It’s becoming part of how we think about our products and our ministry.”
Chalice Press also has more than 250 titles available in a variety of eBook formats for most e-readers.
Ebooks from Chalice Press require a one-time software download. For first-time eBook users who want to practice using eBooks at no cost, the 2013 General Assembly Program and Business Docket is available free. To learn more about these offerings, go to Chalicepress.com and click “FAQ about eBooks” in the left column, or visit Amazon’s Kindle Store.
