The Reverend Ronald J. Degges, President of Disciples Homes Missions (DHM), has announced that Tana Liu-Beers has been called as Immigration Counsel for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This new half-time position, located in DHM, is being funded by multiple General Ministries, Racial/Ethnic Ministries, and Regions of the Disciples. The Immigration Counsel will work with the whole church on a broad array of immigration issues.
Tana is an immigration attorney and an Equal Justice Works Fellow at the North Carolina Justice Center’s Immigrants Legal Assistance Project, where she represents clients in immigration court and works to combat the negative effects of increasing immigrant detentions. Tana has also worked with migrant workers and trafficking victims at the Southern Poverty Law Center, El Centro de los Derechos del Migrante (Migrant Rights Center), and the Farmworker Unit of Legal Aid of North Carolina. She also worked as Immigration Advisor & Parish Development Coordinator with the Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Services in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Tana is a summa cum laude graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, where she majored in Spanish. She also received a Juris Doctor with Honors from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Law in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she was a full merit scholarship recipient.
Tana has volunteered with the UNC Immigration Law Association to design a “know-your-rights” training for immigrants, the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center to interview torture survivors at the York Detention Center, the Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Network to document refugee women’s stories, Amnesty International to establish a Women’s Human Rights Group at Messiah College, and the Mennonite Central Committee to construct water systems for hurricane survivors in Honduras.
Tana lives in Durham, North Carolina where she and her husband, Chris Liu-Beers, attend an American Baptist congregation. She will be deployed staff working from an office in Durham, starting the middle of July.
