Mitchell Eby became the first active NCAA football player to come out as gay, giving a speech in front of his teammates and coaches March 18.
When the Santa Monica native finally worked up the courage to tell his teammates, he said that he wanted to make a difference not only in his own locker room, but also across the country.
Giving a speech to his teammates, who are his closest friends, worked out even better than he had hoped, he said. When he finished speaking, the team responded with applause.
Chapman is proud of its Safe Space program which educate students, faculty and staff about LGBTQIA issues and concerns. The first building to have 100 percent of their staff trained was the Fish Interfaith Center. Currently, the Disciples on Campus student ministry is working toward becoming a Disciples and United Church of Christ Open and Affirming Ministry.
