Each year El Diario/La Prensa honors some of the New York City area’s most successful and influential Latinas making great strides in corporate, business, entertainment, sports and community arenas. This year the publication honored Rev. Dr. Daisy Machado, dean of academic affairs and professor of church history at Union Theological Seminary.
The El Diario article said, “Dr. Machado has developed and researched issues related directly to the Hispanic community. Among them the concept of ‘borderlands’, referring not only to its geographical location, but the position of Latinas and other women of color within a dominant culture.
In the article, Machado said, “Latinos live in a middle world, where we are and are not, and have found God at that intersection, because Jesus was male and was not.”
Since the establishment of the award in 1996, honorees have included journalist Soledad O’Brien, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author Esmeralda Santiago, and Congresswoman Nydia M. Velazquez. The El Diario Foundation also funds a scholarship for local Latinas who have the potential to make a positive impact in their communities.
