Every fall, the Center for Nonprofit Management in Nashville hosts "Salute to Excellence," a dinner and awards presentation that recognizes and honors area nonprofits for their commitment to management excellence. Nine awards and more than $160,000 are presented to deserving organizations and leaders. The awards recognize nonprofits for a job well done and reinforce the importance of effective leadership in the nonprofit sector.
The KraftCPAs Board Member of the Year Award recognizes board members who go the extra mile for their organizations. This year’s winner is Dr. Eugene Regen, Chair of the Board of Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt.
Gene serves as chairman of the Disciples House board. During his board tenure, he has chaired or served on every committee except one and has led in the first CEO assessment and a strategic planning process. He and his wife Elizabeth co-chaired the first Development Committee. Under their leadership, annual giving increased more than 50%. The creative breadth of his support resulted in board challenge gifts, a new scholarship fund, matching gifts, and the annual "Talent in the House" event for students.
Gene is an outstanding long-time lay leader at Woodmont Christian Church, Nashville. As a physician here for decades, his understanding of how professionals are formed more than merely educated has been fundamental at the Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt, where our mission is to form and prepare students for excellence in ministry, in partnership with Vanderbilt Divinity School and the Christian Church (Disciple of Christ).
Mark Miller-McLemore is dean at the Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt.
