Former Lexington Theological Seminary administrator Daisy L. Machado was inaugurated as professor of the history of Christianity at Union Theological Seminary in New York on Feb. 4. Machado was the first Latina vice president for academic affairs and dean of any theological seminary in the United States when she served at LTS, which is associated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Machado, an ordained Disciples pastor, also served as the first director of the Hispanic Theological Initiative from 1996 to 1999, and from 2002 to 2006, she was the chair of the board of the Hispanic summer program. In her inaugural address at Union Theological titled "Expanding Borders of the Historical Enterprise: Religious History for the 21st Century," Machado examined the history of Christianity through the voices of invisible communities, whose overlooked voices, she said, must be included in a holistic understanding of American Christianity.
