Ronald L. Shirey, professor of music at Texas Christian University and choirmaster at University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fort Worth, Texas for 36 years, died Nov. 1 after collapsing in his Fort Worth home while preparing for church. He was 76. Shirey is the former Chorus Director for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and will be remembered as a musical perfectionist. His choirs performed throughout Europe, Asia, Mexico and played at New York’s Carnegie Hall six times.
“Ron’s last major project was the celebration in Nova Scotia, Canada,” said University Christian Church’s chancel choir member Cameron Owen, where the choir traveled to help celebrate the 175 Anniversary of Milton Christian Church in Milton, Nova Scotia, on Oct. 11. “We feel so blessed to have been a part of that with him.”
“The choir sang Sunday, Nov. 1, through and around tears,” said Owen. A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. Friday at University Christian Church. For more information, visit: www.music.tcu.edu/shirey_service.asp
