Inaugurated last week as Transylvania University’s 25th president, R. Owen Williams spoke of his resolve to lead an institution that would continue its work to become one of America’s very best liberal arts colleges. Williams was inaugurated April 29 on Transylvania’s campus. He assumed the presidency of the university on Aug. 1, 2010, after a 24-year career as a Wall Street investment banker and a 10-year period of scholarly preparation at Yale University, Harvard University, and New York University.
In his inaugural address, entitled "Question Everything, Accomplish Anything," Williams implored students to "embrace the world’s ailments as your opportunities. Transylvania will help you find your passion, but to be successful, you must clothe that passion with perseverance." In his first six months as president, Williams articulated five areas of emphasis drawn from Transylvania’s 2009-2012 Strategic Plan: diversity, globalization, sustainability, technology, and community outreach.
