A former missionary to the Philippines, who along with her husband co-founded Disciples Justice Action Network, (DJAN) has died. May Sweet Lord, 84, passed away Feb. 5 in Chicago. Lord was a teacher in the Philippines and the founding pastor for the Koinonia Congregation at Disciples-affiliated Northern Christian College in the Philippines. Lord also taught at inner-city schools in Chicago and Indianapolis for 22 years. She and her husband Harvey started DJAN, a multi-racial, multi-ethnic grassroots network within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) that works for greater justice, peace and diversity.
"May Lord’s friendship, leadership, inspiration, hospitality, generosity, encouragement, grace and charm will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched in a positive way," commented Rev. Ken Brooker Langston, DJAN director. A memorial service in celebration of Lord’s life will take place March 5 at University Church in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.
