Immigration reform has emerged as an important national issue that also engages Disciples. Last month, numerous Disciple churches in the U.S. began holding conversations around the topic to consider what God is calling their congregation to say and do about immigration. The conversation continues Feb. 10-13 at a Border Conference where various aspects of immigration will be examined.
The conference, entitled, "Turning Walls into Tables… A BORDER Experience" will be held in San Diego, Calif. at Casa De Oracion Christian Church. It is sponsored by Global Ministries, Disciples Home Missions, the Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries and the United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries.
Among other activities, participants will cross the San Diego/Tijuana Border to visit and talk with Mexican people whose lives on both sides of the border are directly affected by the challenges of U.S. immigration policies. There also will be plenary presenters who are working on Mexico/U.S. border concerns in Texas, Arizona, and California. Daisy Machado, an ordained Disciples minister and dean of academic affairs and professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary in New York City will be theologian in residence. Scholarships are available for young adults. To learn more, visit: globalministries.org/calendar/border-conference.html
