Disciples are being encouraged to urge their congressional representatives to end the ban on travel by United States citizens to Cuba. The Division of Overseas Ministries/Global Ministries is asking Disciples to write letters to Congress asking that legislation be passed that would lift travel restrictions to Cuba for all Americans. Lawmakers introduced bills earlier this month which would end the travel ban. In addition, General Minister and President Sharon Watkins was a co-signer last month on a letter to Congress urging legislators to end the Cuba travel ban.
President Obama’s administration has relaxed the travel restriction to Cuba for Cuban Americans with family on the island nation, and launched a review U.S. policy toward Cuba. Additionally, earlier this month S. 428, "The Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act," was introduced in the U.S. Senate, and a similar bill, H.R. 874, was brought up in the House.
