Three Disciples regions were represented on a ‘Be a Global Mission Region’ Pilgrimage to Central America. These pilgrimages were initiated by David Vargas and designed to provide an opportunity for an immersion experience in which regions can discern how they may live out their commitment to ‘Be a Global Mission Church.’ After gathering in Houston for a day of orientation and Ministries and Mission Interpreters training, the group traveled to Guatemala (May 10-14), Nicaragua (May 14-17) and El Salvador (May 17-19) to visit Global Ministries partners and missionaries. The trip participants were: Teresa Dulyea-Parker – Illinois Wisconsin Region; Ruth Fletcher and Ron Greene – Montana Region, Jim Piper – Idaho South Region; Felix Ortiz – Global Ministries area executive for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Bob Shebeck – Global Ministries mission interpretation executive.
The experience was life changing as the group explored the many dimensions of mutual accompaniment in mission in a global context. Upon returning to his local congregation, Ron Greene shared the following in his newsletter: "I was prepared for new experiences and the blessings of meeting new friends among our global mission partners … but I wasn’t prepared for the intensity of the experience. And our ministry was to listen … to listen and pray as our brothers and sisters talked with us across language barriers about the suffering and trials, the joys and blessings of their ministry with some of the same challenges we face in the U.S. We have much to learn from our neighbors in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador about faithfulness in these times. Our partners are praying for us in Montana."
