Global Ministries is asking President Barack Obama to support democracy and a sustainable peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In a letter dated July 24, Global Ministries, a common witness of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, wrote that it was sharing concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the country.
"We are troubled by the persistent violence in the DRC and deeply concerned about its future," the letter writers said. "We continue to be saddened by the daily reports of thousands of people dying with almost half of these being children under the age of five." The letter requests that the president support national reconciliation in the Congo and the rightful ownership of the country’s wealth for the people of the Congo, among other things. The letter is copied to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was in the Congo earlier this week, as well as Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
