Week Of Compassion, Global Ministries Send Help For Taiwan Typhoon Victims

Typhoon Morakot, which hit Taiwan Aug. 7, has taken at least 400 lives and caused more than $2 billion in property damage. The storm triggered landslides and widespread flooding that trapped thousands of people in remote mountain villages for days in the Pacific Island nation. It is being called Taiwan’s worst natural disaster in at least 50 years and has left at least 7,000 people homeless. Morakot dumped up to six feet of rain in three days.
Attempts to assess the extent of loss of life and damages by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) are being hampered by high water levels, impassible roads, collapsed bridges and disruptions to electricity and communications. The PCT fears that entire villages may have been swept off of the map. Week of Compassion has sent an initial grant to assist with immediate aid.
