Dr. Richard Hamm, the executive director of Christian Churches Together and former general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), will be presented with an honorary degree of doctor of divinity by Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) at the seminary’s commencement exercises on May 16.
In awarding the degree, the board of trustees of CTS cited Hamm’s service to the church over twenty years as a pastor at congregations of all sizes in both urban and rural settings and as a judicatory leader. Hamm served as the general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from 1993 – 2003.
CTS also recognized that under Hamm’s leadership, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) experienced significant growth in its number of congregations and instituted a formal Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation process for the entire church.
Since leaving the position of GMP, Hamm has founded The Columbia Partnership, an organization that combines the expertise of business leaders with organizations that operate in the faith-based arena. In August 2007, Hamm was called to serve as the executive administrator for Christian Churches Together, an organization that brings together Christian communions and organizations to work together where they can find common ground primarily through evangelism and the fight against poverty.
Hamm is the author of seven books and the holder of seven honorary degrees. He received his Docor of Ministry degree from CTS in 1974.
