Jump in; the fishing is great, and theology to boot!

An annual camping trip in Wyoming started by two Disciples three years ago has resulted in more than old fish tales. For many years, Don Sarton, who retires June 30 as Vice President of the Christian Church Foundation (Mountain West Zone), presented estate planning workshops at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Sheridan, Wyo. After the meetings, Sarton and the church’s pastor, Doug Goodwin, would go fishing and discuss theology. That led to a yearly outing in which they would invite others to go fishing with them and talk theology.

With the beautiful Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming as a backdrop, "mostly, we were blessed to have Victor Hunter as our guest leader" on the first trip, stated Goodwin. Hunter is retired pastor and former minister of theology, preaching and pastoral care at Evergreen Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Evergreen, Colo. Last summer’s guest leader was Joe Bessler, Ph.D., and professor of theology at Phillips Theological Seminary. This year, Dr. Rick Lowery, Affiliated Professor of Hebrew Bible at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla., and Adjunct Professor of Hebrew Bible at Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Ky., will be the guest leader Aug. 1-5 at Bear Lodge Resort. "It’s going to be another great year of talking theology and fishing," said Goodwin.
