A ‘green retreat’ of Disciples in Kentucky brought together 35 people from 18 congregations to talk about ways to empower congregations to be better stewards of the earth and to develop a network of ‘green’ Disciples. Meeting at Kentucky’s Rough River State Park Nov. 20 to 21, participants heard presentations on just food systems, sacred space, mountaintop removal, and other issues of particular importance to those in the state.
The retreat was convened by Kentucky Regional Minister Greg Alexander, a long-time advocate for environmental concerns and Carol Devine, pastor of Republican Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Cynthiana, Ky., who has been a leader in the effort. Angela Herrmann, Disciples Home Missions staff person, was among the presenters and shared plans to certify green congregations through a new program established by Disciples Home Missions and Church Extension.
