It was a most pleasant day and powerful experience to see serious and intentional efforts made in truly expanding the table of our Lord. Pentecost Sunday 2009 was made most special in Goldsboro, North Carolina as I witnessed our General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Sharon Watkins and General Bishop of the Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, International, Dr. Alton Smith share the pulpit and lead in worship. It was an evening of Unity in the right sense of the word. The 11: 00 am worship closing out the May District Union Meeting of the Goldsboro – Raleigh District Assembly, Inc., is where Rev. Dr. Rick Lowery, preached a powerful sermon in a spirit filled service. We were on one accord.
As Administrative Secretary of the National Convocation and Associate General Minister of the Christian Church, I have always felt that our brothers and sisters in the Assemblies Churches were like distant relatives. Historic dynamics of racism, violence and segregation have caused a separation that God is not pleased with. We have likenesses and differences in our practices. But our belief in God and faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ are what we have in common. This experience will help us to build unity on our common ground. I pray that this Pentecost will be the beginning of a miracle where the Holy Spirit will truly make us one.
