The tens of thousands of refugees who languish in makeshift camps and temporary shelter around the world are remembered every year on World Refuge Day, which is observed this year on June 20. Congregations are encouraged to celebrate it on the Sunday closest to that day. Those ministries that have helped to resettle refugees in the past are urged to celebrate their accomplishments and the people that they have helped.
The theme for the 2011 World Refugee Day is "1 is too many." "1 family forced to flee is too many; 1 refugee without hope is too many…; 1 child growing up in a camp is too many; 1 family torn apart by war is too many; 1 girl raped at gunpoint is too many…" Resources for this year’s observance can be found through Disciples Home Missions at: www.discipleshomemissions.org/pages/RIM-WRD
