I had to preach and run – all too common a scenario! But in the hours I was at the Festival of Young Preachers, I was blessed! Over 120 preachers, aged 14-29, gathered to preach for each other over three days. Together with their mentors and sponsors they are answering the challenge in the Apostle Paul’s question, “How will they hear without a preacher?”
Coming from more than 25 (!) denominations, these high school, college and seminary students from more than 25 states represent the church at its core calling: to make known the love of God through Jesus Christ.
Though seasoned preachers like me were scattered throughout the agenda, I told them that young preachers will learn a lot of what they need to know from each other.
“It’s an amazing time to be church! Many of you will know better than us natives of the 20th century how to make the Gospel plain in this time. (Or you’ll have to figure it out . . .)”
Part of what the Lilly-funded sponsors of this event have already figured out is that you don’t have to be physically on site to get a taste of what is going on. All participants were encouraged to participate via Facebook (Academy of Preachers), Twitter (youngpreachers) and Youtube. I encourage you to do the same.
