Grants & Scholarships
Congregations
- The purpose of the Black Disciples Endowment Fund is to undergird Black ministries within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. This purpose is achieved through grants to ministries of Leadership Development, congregational Growth and Vitality and Responses to and advocacy for the well-being of the African American community.
- Disciples Women Endowment Fund provides grants for leadership training, scholarship support, outreach ministries, faith development and women’s programming.
- Pension Fund’s Excellence in Ministry program
- Disciples Church Extension Fund – New congregations’ Holy Places grants
- Black Leadership Projects Grants: Funds are granted to applicants whose projects develop, nurture, and strengthen church leadership in African American congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Congregations or Disciples’ Health and Social Service Ministries
- The National Benevolent Association has purpose-restricted funds for “Educational Purposes for At-Risk Children and Youth” between the ages of 10-25 years, and for “Older Adult Ministries” serving those who are 50 years or older.
Regions
- The purpose of the Black Disciples Endowment Fund is to undergird Black ministries within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. This purpose is achieved through grants to ministries of Leadership Development, congregational Growth and Vitality and Responses to and advocacy for the well-being of the African American community.
General Ministries
- Reconciliation Ministry receives proposals for new projects that target anti-racism/anti-bigotry and projects that promote initiatives that are promote racial reconciliation. Grant awards are intended for General Ministries, Regional Ministries, Institutions of Higher Education and recognized ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Education
Undergraduate
- The Edwin G. and Lauretta M. Michael Endowment Fund was established by the will of the Rev. and Mrs. Michael for scholarship of ministerial families. By the decision of the Michael children, the funds are presently restricted to financial aid for ministers’ spouses whose basic education was interrupted to enable their wife or husband to complete their theological education.
- HELM Leadership Fellows: While the Leadership Fellows Program does include a grant, it is not primarily a scholarship program.
- African-American Scholarship Fund: The Executive Committee of the United Christian Missionary Society (UCMS) established the Negro Student Scholarship Fund in June 1939 with funds raised for Central Christian Institute in Kentucky. Today these funds are granted to African-American young men or women desiring to participate in Christian service and obtain a college education.
- Phillips University Legacy Fund has undergraduate scholarships available for individuals attending Disciples-related schools.
Graduate
- Disciples Women Endowment Fund – Seminarians: A maximum of one-third (1/3) of the total cost for a scholarship, event or mission trip will be considered.
- Disciple Chaplains Fund: First year seminarians do not have to commit to a chaplaincy program.
- The Choi Scholarship is available to Disciples seminarians of Asian and Pacific Islander descent who are in preparation for ministry in a multi-racial/cultural community.
- The Michelle Jackson Scholarship is to provide a legacy for her stillborn ministry. It will serve African-American Disciples women in M.Div. degree programs at accredited seminaries whose lives offer the same deeply spiritual charisma and gifts for leadership in the church that were evident in Ms. Jackson’s too-short life and ministry.
- The Kagiwada Scholarship is available to North American Pacific/Asian Disciples ministerial students enrolled (or accepted as an entering student) in an accredited graduate theological school or seminary.
- Iva Mattison established the scholarship for those preparing to serve the church in the area of ministry with youth in 1993 so that their love and commitment to young people would continue to be experienced by generations to come.
- Philputt Scholarship: Students enrolled at the University of Chicago Divinity School, Union Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt Divinity School, or Yale Divinity School, may apply for these funds.
- Rowley Wolfe Ministerial Education Scholarship Fund
- The Katherine Schutze Scholarship was founded to encourage future generations of women as they prepare for ordained ministry.
- Lorenzo J. Evans and Alfred C. Stone, conceived of the idea of Star Supporter scholarships to develop a fund to be used for the education of Black pastors.
- The William Gilbert and Florence Leonard Jones scholarship is intended for members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) working towards a Ph.D. in religion, who are also currently ordained or preparing for ordination in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and who intend to provide leadership to a congregation or other agency of the church.
- The Dickerson Scholarship Program honors Ann E. Dickerson, who was elected Vice-Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in August 1975. The Dickerson scholarship is awarded to female members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) pursuing a Ph.D. in religion.
- The McCaw Scholarship is awarded to current seminarians in Disciples-related schools and Union Theological Seminary (NYC) by the College of Regional Ministers. Contact Rev. Thad Allen, regional minister in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, for details.
- Phillips University Legacy Fund has scholarships for first-year, full-time students in Disciples-related seminaries.
Continuing Education
- Disciples Home Missions has limited funds for continuing education grants to commissioned clergy of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
- Disciples Home Missions has limited funds for continuing education grants to ordained clergy.
- Disciples Women Endowment Fund – Women’s Action Web and Woman-to-Woman Worldwide: a maximum of one-third (1/3) of the total program cost will be considered for regions/constituencies who have participated in the program previously. A maximum of two-thirds (2/3) of the total program cost will be considered for regions/constituencies who are first time participants.
