
Rev. Dr. James P. Johnson, an extraordinary leader, pastor, and servant of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026. His life and ministry were marked by generosity, integrity, and a deep commitment to the Church’s mission.
Dr. Johnson faithfully served in many roles across the Christian Church including President of the Church Finance Council, President of the Christian Church Foundation, and President of Lexington Theological Seminary. He also served as a congregational pastor and in other leadership positions. Through each role, he was known for his wisdom, steady leadership, and ability to inspire faithful stewardship and service.
Those who worked alongside him remember Dr. Johnson as a trusted mentor, compassionate colleague, and devoted friend. His legacy lives on through the ministries he strengthened and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating his life and ministry will be held at a later date in Indianapolis. Learn more about his remarkable accomplishments here.
